Thought for MAY: Farm: from firmare in Late Latin, "to confirm by one's signature." The sense of "signature," the brand-mark on sheep, carries the implication of "signed document." The first O.E.D. entry of farm (1400 AD) signified "a firm amount payable as rent, tax, etc." Farms did not conform to our sense of "farm" until well into the 16th century.
